Clothed in the Love of Christ
“Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.”

Paul begins this passage by reminding believers who they are: chosen by God, holy, and beloved. Before he tells them what to put on, he reminds them whose they are. Our kindness does not purchase God’s love. Rather, because we belong to Christ and are loved by Him, we are called to reflect His character in our everyday relationships.
To “put on” these qualities is to bring our conduct into agreement with that identity. The phrase “bowels of mercies” speaks of deep, heartfelt compassion. Such compassion changes our words. Instead of answering quickly or assuming the worst, we can listen carefully and speak truth with gentleness. Humility makes room for another person’s needs without insisting that our own concerns must always come first.
Patience and forgiveness bring Christ’s love into difficult moments. “Forbearing one another” means bearing with one another rather than demanding that everyone be easy to love. And when someone wrongs us, Paul directs our attention to Jesus: “even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.” Forgiveness does not call evil good or remove the need for wise boundaries. It calls us away from revenge and toward the mercy we ourselves have received.
Above all, Paul tells us to put on charity—love—which binds these virtues together in maturity and wholeness. Without love, service can become a performance, and patience can become little more than concealed resentment. The love of Christ gives our actions a different purpose: not to gain attention or keep score, but to seek another person’s good.
As this week unfolds, ordinary encounters will offer opportunities to wear what Paul describes. A conversation may need gentleness; a delay may require patience; an unnoticed need may invite service. We will not respond perfectly every time. Yet we can return to Jesus, receive His correction and grace, and ask Him to make His love visible through us again.
A Moment With God
Sit quietly before the Lord and consider one relationship in which your patience has grown thin. What might compassion, humility, or forgiveness look like there? Remember that you are beloved by God, and ask Jesus to guide your next response—not merely toward a calmer appearance, but toward a heart shaped by His love.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for loving me and forgiving me with such abundant mercy. Forgive my careless words, my impatience, and the times I have served while keeping score. Teach me to listen with compassion, speak with gentleness, and forgive as You have forgiven me. Give me wisdom where relationships are difficult and humility where my own heart needs correction. By Your Spirit, let Your love guide my words and actions throughout this week. May the people I encounter receive a glimpse of Your kindness through me. In Your holy name I pray, Amen.
