Courage While We Wait
“1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. 3 Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident. 4 One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple. 5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock. 6 And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD. 7 Hear, O LORD, when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me. 8 When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek. 9 Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation. 10 When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up. 11 Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies. 12 Deliver me not over unto the will of mine enemies: for false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty. 13 I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. 14 Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.”
Some days, the hardest part of faith is not taking a step but waiting for the way to become clear. David begins Psalm 27 by naming his source of confidence: the Lord Himself. His light, salvation, and strength do not depend on peaceful circumstances. Enemies are still present, and trouble is still real, yet David looks beyond what threatens him to the God who sustains him.
At the heart of this psalm is a desire deeper than escape: “One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after.” David longs to dwell in God’s presence and behold His beauty. When uncertainty fills our thoughts, our prayers can become focused entirely on getting an answer. God welcomes those requests, but He also invites us to seek His face—to know Him, worship Him, and remain attentive to His Word while we wait.
David’s confidence does not silence his cries for mercy. He asks God to hear him, help him, and never forsake him. This is a tender reminder that courageous faith can include trembling prayers. You do not have to hide your weariness or polish your words before coming to God. Through Jesus Christ, we can draw near with honest hearts, trusting the love revealed in His death and resurrection.
Waiting on the Lord is not giving up or refusing to act. David prays, “Teach me thy way, O LORD,” showing us that waiting includes a willingness to be led. We can obey what God has already made clear, love the people He has placed before us, and resist the urge to force an outcome. His goodness is our hope, even when His timing remains beyond our understanding.
The psalm closes with a call to wait and be courageous, accompanied by the assurance that God will strengthen the heart. That strength may not arrive as a sudden change in circumstances. It may be the grace to pray again, speak truth gently, or remain faithful through another uncertain day. Dear friend, you do not need to see the whole road to trust the Lord who is your light. Seek His face today, and depend on Him for the courage to take your next faithful step.
A Moment With God
Take a quiet moment before the Lord and name the situation in which waiting feels hardest. What fear rises when you cannot see the outcome? Bring that fear honestly to Him, then slowly read Psalm 27:8 and 14 again. Ask God to turn your attention toward His presence and show you what faithfulness looks like today, without demanding that tomorrow be explained.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, You are my light, my salvation, and the strength of my life. You know the questions I carry and the places where my courage feels small. Thank You for welcoming me through Jesus Christ, my Savior. Forgive me for the times I seek control more eagerly than I seek Your face. Teach me Your way, steady my heart, and help me obey You while I wait. Let the love of Jesus shape my words and actions today. Whether answers come quickly or slowly, keep me near to You and confident in Your goodness. In the precious name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Today’s Challenge
Write one concern you are waiting on God about, then turn it into a brief prayer of surrender: “Lord Jesus, I entrust this to You. Help me follow Your way today.”
