Held by a Love That Will Not Let Go

“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8:38–39 (KJV)

There are days when God’s love feels wonderfully near, and days when sorrow or uncertainty makes it difficult to sense His presence. Romans 8:38–39 offers assurance for both. Our confidence rests not in how strongly we feel loved, but in the faithful God who has revealed His love through Jesus Christ.

Paul writes, “For I am persuaded,” with a conviction that does not ignore suffering. Earlier in this chapter, he names tribulation, distress, persecution, and danger. His assurance is not that believers will escape every painful experience, but that none of these experiences can separate them from God’s love. Trouble is real, yet it does not have the power to undo what God has secured in Christ.

Notice how completely these verses address our fears: death and life, the present and the future, height and depth. Even the things we cannot predict or control fall within the reach of this promise. The unknown appointment, the difficult conversation, and the grief we carry are not places where God’s love abandons us.

This love is found “in Christ Jesus our Lord.” At the cross, Jesus gave Himself for us; through His resurrection, He opened the way to life in Him. We do not have to make ourselves worthy before bringing Him our weakness. We can come honestly, confessing our sins and trusting our Savior’s mercy rather than our own strength.

Today, let this promise steady your heart. You may still need to weep, seek help, or take a difficult next step. Faith does not require pretending that everything is easy. It means trusting that, through everything you face, you remain held by the love of God in Jesus Christ.

A Moment With God

Take a quiet moment with God and name the concern that makes you feel most alone. Slowly read Romans 8:38–39 again, remembering that this promise includes both what you face now and what lies ahead. Ask the Lord to help you receive His assurance, even if your emotions need time to settle.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me through Jesus Christ. When fear grows loud and circumstances feel overwhelming, remind me that nothing can separate me from Your love in Him. Forgive me for the ways I turn away from You, and draw my heart toward Your truth. Help me bring You my sorrow without shame and face today with quiet trust. Let the assurance of Your love shape how I care for others. In the name of Jesus Christ, my Savior and Lord, Amen.

Today’s Challenge

Send one thoughtful message to someone facing a difficult season. Share Romans 8:38–39 and remind them that their hardship does not mean God has stopped loving them.
