Mercy Meets Us in the Morning
“It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”
Some mornings begin with gratitude; others begin with a heavy heart. Before our feet touch the floor, yesterday’s worries may already be calling for our attention. Into that tender place, Lamentations speaks a steady word of hope: the Lord’s compassions have not failed. We do not have to pretend that everything is well to trust that God is faithful.
These verses arise from deep sorrow, not comfortable circumstances. Lamentations gives voice to the devastation of Jerusalem, yet in the midst of grief comes this confession: “great is thy faithfulness.” The suffering is real, but it is not the whole story. God’s mercy remains a reason to hope even when relief has not yet come.
“They are new every morning” does not mean every sunrise brings an immediate solution. It means we never wake to find that God’s compassion has run out. We may still need to grieve, repent, seek help, or take a difficult next step. Yet we can do so trusting the One whose steadfast love does not depend on our strength or our ability to understand His ways.
For those who belong to Jesus Christ, the cross and resurrection give us sure grounds to trust God’s saving love. Jesus gave Himself for our sins and rose again, opening the way for us to draw near to God. When we have failed, we can confess rather than hide. When we are weary, we can ask for help rather than believe we must carry every burden alone.
Today, let God’s faithfulness have the first word over your heart. Before you measure your responsibilities or revisit your regrets, pause to acknowledge His mercy. You may not know how every detail of this day will unfold, but you can entrust yourself to the Lord whose compassions fail not.
A Moment With God
Take a quiet moment with God and name what you carried into this morning. Is it grief, regret, uncertainty, or weariness? You do not need polished words. Bring Him the truth of your heart, then slowly read this confession: “great is thy faithfulness.”
Where might you need to trust His compassion today? Ask the Lord to help you receive His mercy without pretending away your pain, and to recognize His care as you take your next faithful step.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that Your compassions fail not. You know the burdens I carried into this morning and the places where my faith feels weak. Forgive my sins, quiet my anxious heart, and help me draw near to You through Jesus Christ. Thank You for His sacrifice and resurrection, and for the hope I have in Him. Give me grace to obey You today, even where the way is difficult, and let the mercy I receive from You shape the love I offer others. In the precious name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Today’s Challenge
Send one thoughtful message to someone who is facing a difficult season. Acknowledge what they are carrying and remind them, gently and without minimizing their pain, that God’s compassions fail not.
