Mercy That Never Runs Out
“O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever. O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever.”
Some mornings, thanksgiving comes easily. Other mornings, our hearts are burdened before the day even begins. Psalm 136 speaks into both kinds of mornings with the same invitation: give thanks to the Lord. The reason is not that everything around us is good, but that He is good—and His mercy endures forever.
Three times in these opening verses, we hear the same assurance. This repetition gives our hearts a truth to return to when worry becomes loud. God’s mercy is not a brief kindness that disappears when life grows difficult. We do not have to face today wondering whether His goodness has reached its limit.
The psalm also names Him as the God of gods and the Lord of lords. No rival power stands above Him. Yet His greatness is joined with mercy. The One who reigns over all is not indifferent to our tears or dismissive of our weakness. We can approach Him with reverence and bring Him the burdens we struggle to put into words.
As followers of Jesus Christ, we see God’s mercy displayed in our Savior, who gave Himself for our sins and rose again. His mercy does not ask us to pretend that sin is harmless or that our wounds are small. It invites us to come honestly, repent where we have wandered, and receive the forgiveness and hope found in Christ.
Today, let thanksgiving begin with who God is rather than with how smoothly life is going. You may still be waiting for an answer or walking through sorrow. You do not have to deny that pain to praise Him. Even through tears, you can offer this simple confession: Lord, You are good, and Your mercy endures forever.
A Moment With God
Take a quiet moment and slowly read the words, “for his mercy endureth for ever.” What burden or regret comes to mind as you hear them? Bring it honestly before the Lord. Remember one way He has shown you mercy, and let that remembrance become a simple prayer of thanks.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that Your goodness does not change with my circumstances. Thank You for the mercy You have shown me through Jesus Christ, my Savior. Forgive me for the times I have allowed fear or shame to keep me from turning to You. Help me confess my sins honestly, trust Your forgiveness, and rest in Your faithful care. In sorrow, teach me to give thanks without hiding my tears. In joy, keep me mindful that every good gift comes from You. Let the mercy I have received shape the way I treat others today. In the precious name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Today’s Challenge
