Trusting the One Who Leads Us Home
“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
As Jesus prepared His disciples for His departure, He spoke tenderly to their troubled hearts. “Let not your heart be troubled” was not a demand that they pretend everything was easy. It was an invitation to place their confidence in Him. The One speaking comfort would soon go to the cross, yet He was caring for those He loved. We can bring our fears to that same compassionate Savior today.
Jesus directed their attention beyond the uncertainty before them to the security of His Father’s house. He promised to prepare a place and to come again to receive them unto Himself. At the heart of this promise is His presence: “that where I am, there ye may be also.” Our deepest hope is not merely a beautiful destination, but everlasting fellowship with the Lord who saves us.
Thomas responded with an honest question. He did not understand where Jesus was going or how they could know the way. His words remind us that we do not have to hide our confusion from God. We may come humbly with questions, opening our hearts to the answer Jesus gives rather than demanding that we understand every detail first.
Jesus answered by pointing to Himself: “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” He is not simply one guide among many. He alone brings us to the Father. Our confidence rests neither in our goodness nor in our ability to find our own spiritual path, but in the crucified and risen Savior. We trust His person, His saving work, and His faithful word.
Whatever lies before you today, you do not need to know every turn in the road to trust Jesus. His promise does not remove every earthly hardship, but it gives your heart a sure foundation within it. The Savior who opens the way to the Father is worthy of your trust now—and your eternal hope rests securely in Him.
A Moment With God
Take a quiet moment to name before the Lord whatever is troubling your heart. Are you waiting for complete understanding before you will trust Him? Read Jesus’ words slowly: “believe also in me.” Let His invitation draw you into honest prayer.
Consider the comfort of His promise to receive His people unto Himself. Ask God to deepen your confidence in Jesus—not only as the way to your eternal home, but as the Savior whose words you can rely on today.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for welcoming us through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus, You know the fears we carry and the questions we struggle to express. Teach us to trust You when we cannot see what comes next. Turn our hearts from self-reliance to Your finished saving work, and anchor our hope in Your promise to receive us unto Yourself. Help us walk in obedience today, comforted by Your love and confident that You alone are the way, the truth, and the life. In Your holy name we pray, Amen.
Today’s Challenge
Send one person who is facing uncertainty a brief message of encouragement using John 14:1. Remind them gently that they can bring their troubled heart to Jesus and trust His faithful care.
